Book Study: The Anxious Generation written by Social Psychologist Jonathan HaidtAfter more than a decade of stability or improvements, the mental health of our adolescents plunged in the early 2010's, with that plunge continuing post-pandemic exponentially. The Anxious Generation, written by social psychologist Johnathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. In this book study we will follow Haidt's investigation and research of the nature of childhood, the importance of play and independent exploration in the journey through adolescence into mature competent, thriving adults. In his book, Haidt shows how the play-based childhood was largely wiped out by the arrival of the phone-based childhood beginning the early 2010's. He presents more than a dozen mechanisms by which this great rewiring of childhood has interfered with children's social and neurological development, covering everything from sleep hygiene to attention fragmentation, addiction, loneliness, social contagion, social comparison and perfectionism. The book explores gender differences in negative impact, with serious and at times, disastrous consequences for youth, their families and societies.
Participants will explore and discuss the research within this book, if and how we see this playing out across our students and schools, and what might be our calls to action in education. What are we doing well, where is there room to grow, and how might we action Haidt's 'four simple rules' that might set all of us up for success. Participants must commit to attending ALL 3 book study sessions, Oct 1, Nov 5 and Nov 26, at the Education Center, Wild Rose C.
The first 25 participants registered in the RVSPL site will receive a hard copy of the book for your summer reading; all others will need to purchase their copy or download from their favourite audio book seller. Spotify was offering a free download of the book, so check that out!

Connect Parent Group
An attachment based program to support parents and caregivers of adolescents.
Connect© Parent Group - An Attachment-Based Program to Support Parents and CaregiversAn Attachment-Based Program to Support Parents & Caregivers Do you ever feel that your teen doesn't listen to you? Do you feel pushed away? Do parents matter? Actually, there is very good evidence that strong relationships with parents protect youth from risk during adolescence and help them thrive! We call that ATTACHMENT!! Connect© is a FREE 9-week program to support parents of pre-teens and teens. Parents meet in groups of 10-16 with two trained group leaders for 1.5 hours per week. Co-developed over the last 10 years by the Maples Adolescent Treatment Centre and Simon Fraser University, the program focuses on the core components of secure attachment to promote children's social, emotional, and behavioural adjustment. Connect© helps caregivers understand basic attachment concepts which can then be applied across a broad range of situations and relational concepts. Each session provides parents with an attachment perspective on parent-child relationships and adolescent development. Parents watch role-plays, do exercises and discuss ways of responding to challenging behaviour and problems. After each session, parents receive handouts with key points to remember when applying the principles to their own parent-child relationships.

Gimkit Session - OnlineGimkit is a quiz learning game for students and teachers. After signing up, you begin by creating "kits" (live learning games) to create quizzes in multiple choice or short answer form. Create from scratch, import an existing quiz from Quizlet or a CSV file, or copy quizzes from the Gimkit gallery to modify for your use. Gimkit is like Kahoot, except students can move through the questions at their own pace and are still able to be part of the game! I have used Gimkit with my online grade 7 class this year, and they love it! During this session I will show you different styles of games Gimkit has to offer and how to set up your first "kit". Please check out this short video below to give you a glimpse of what this program can offer to keep students engaged during learning.

Health and CTF: Explore how myBlueprint Resources Support Career Learning Outcomes in Health and CTFHealth Promotion, is Violence Prevention: The Neurosequential Model in EducationThe Neurosequential Model in Education is a neurodevelopmentally-informed, biologically
respectful perspective on human development and functioning to help educators understand
student behavior and performance. The goal of this session is for participants to gain a deeper understanding of the basic
concepts of neurosequential development and how to apply this knowledge to
teaching, learning and responding to behaviours that may not seem to make
sense. NME is not a specific “intervention”; it is a way of approaching children,
youth and each other, in our day-to-day activities, our approaches to teaching and learning,
through a deep understanding of brain development and developmental trauma, and the
impact on learning. Participants will understand how to apply knowledge learned to their
work with students in and outside the classroom, particularly with those students with
behaviours we don’t understand, but also to all children and youth we encounter in our
varied interactions throughout each day.

MAKERSPACES - Library 2.0
"Makerspaces," will be held online (and for free) on Wednesday, October 11th, from 1:00pm - 4:00pm MST. There has been a lot of talk about Makerspaces in libraries (and Learning Commons) over the past four years. If you are unsure what Makerspaces are, think of them as creative locations for tinkering, collaborating, problem solving, and creating in a library or educational space. No matter how many maker learning spaces you may visit, you will quickly notice no two are the same. Each librarian and makerspace delivers a unique brand of service to each individual community. Attendees will investigate how librarians with Makerspaces can create new partnerships and collaborative efforts in and with their communities, offering further services and methods to meet patron needs. We invite all library professionals, employers, LIS students, and educators to provide input and participate this event.
Making Learning Visible
One of the strategies of the RVS Four Year Plan: Innovators by Design is Making Learning Visible. In these sessions, RVS teachers & leaders explore the ways in which students can create original content with purpose for authentic audiences. Design learning experiences for students that engage them in the creative process, writing to be read, speaking to be heard and representing to be seen. Practice the skills and learn the technologies for publishing on the page, presenting on the stage and producing on the screen. Discover more about #VisualLiteracy in #rvsed at www.rockyview.studio
MANDT - Physical Intervention (Half Day Training)This half-day follow-up workshop builds on the Relational and Technical Mandt workshop. focusing on Conceptual knowledge on Trauma-Informed Practice and Positive Behavioural Supports. The Mandt System is a comprehensive, integrated approach to preventing, de-escalating, and if necessary, intervening when the behaviour of an individual poses a threat of harm to themselves and/or others.
Mandt Relational Training Chapters 1-3The Mandt System is a comprehensive, integrated approach to preventing, de-escalating, and if necessary, intervening when the behaviour of an individual poses a threat of harm to themselves and/or others. This one day training session covers Chapters 1-3 in the Relational Skills Section. This section provides the framework needed to build the foundation of all human services, the relationships between the caregivers. Relational skills will open the door to the conceptual and technical skills offered in human service settings. Relational skills will make the conceptual and technical skills of staff even more effective because they are trusted. Dr. Peter Breggin, quoted above, says “It is easier to de-escalate with someone you know and trust than someone you do not know and cannot trust, or someone you know and do not trust.” Audience: Assistants, Teachers, Guidance Counsellors, CDAs, School Administrators & Mental Health Workers. The MANDT system training is for anyone who works with people who may have strong emotional reactions or behavioural challenges.

Menstruation and Puberty: Empowering Females In Our SchoolsThis session will review the book “Menstruation and Me: A Book for Girls with Intellectual Disabilities”. This activity-based book was created as a response to the lack of literature and evidence-based research regarding menstrual care for those with an intellectual disability. As a result, we continue to see high rates of preventative or reversible practices aimed at eliminating menses (Abraham et al., 1985). This book was designed to be used by any girl with an intellectual disability beginning or going through puberty, as well as any typically developing female. It is also designed for parents, caregivers, healthcare professionals, any school-based education professional, or other service provider to help the girls explore their journey in gaining independence. This session will provide information on the impact the lack of menstrual care evidence-based research and strategies have on our female students, both in and out of the school setting. It will also provide information on practical and hands on solutions that could be added into our schools to promote independence, autonomy, and choice in this occupation.
Mental Health First Aid for Adults who Interact with Youth- 2 Day WorkshopMHFA Canada: For Adults Who Interact with Youth focuses on mental health
problems and first aid for youth ages 12 to 24. Mental health problems
often first develop during adolescence or early adulthood, with half of all
mental disorders beginning by age 14, and 75 percent beginning by age 24. Most mental disorders develop gradually. The early signs and
symptoms of developing mental health problems will be different from the more
established clinical profiles, which are reflected later in life. The
social, educational and family environments in which mental disorders occur in
young people are also different from those later in life. Therefore, the
information in this course is designed to be sensitive to the unique aspects of
mental health problems in young people. It is meant to assist education
professionals, health providers, parents and other adults in the identification
of mental health problems and appropriate first aid intervention strategies. MHFA Canada teaches mental health first aid skills. The course
does not train people to be therapists, counsellors or mental health
professionals. The philosophy behind MHFA Canada is that mental health
crisis, such as suicidal and self-harming actions, may be avoided through early
intervention. If crisis do arise, then members of the public can take
action that may reduce the harm that could result. The following mental health problems are covered:

Natural Supports Framework TrainingNatural
supports are relationships and associations that are ‘natural’ in the sense
that they are informally and locally developed; and are based on reciprocity or
give and take. Natural supports include family, friends, neighbours, coaches,
team-mates, and others who comprise our social network. A
growing body of research clearly demonstrates the connection between positive
natural supports and healthy youth development. Natural supports play a
critical role in promoting youth resiliency, social integration, and positive
development. They can also contribute to a youth’s recovery and growth process,
reduce psychological distress, and help vulnerable youth successfully
transition to adulthood. Professional
supports, while important, aren’t sustainable. Programs end, professionals
change jobs, and youth age out of services. An over-reliance on professional
supports ultimately increases vulnerability. Through utilizing
the Practice Framework in working with youth, we work towards empowering youth
to rely on and contribute to a life-long network of supportive family,
community, and peer relationships. Staff must attend both Part one and Part two of this training in order to be certified.

Psychological First Aid - After a Disaster or Emergency
Psychological First Aid - After a Disaster or Emergency What is Psychological First Aid (PFA)? Psychological First Aid (PFA) is a way of people helping people immediately after a disaster or emergency. PFA providers give practical support in a way that respects the person's dignity, culture, and abilities. PFA providers must take care for their own well-being first so they can be helpful to others. PFA involves:
Not everyone needs the same amount of help after a disaster or emergency. Many people recover without help. Experts agree that a 'stepped care' approach is best. Who is PFA for? You can offer PFA to children, adolescents, parents, families, and adults who have been through a disaster or emergency. Not everyone will want or need help after a disaster. You can also give PFA to first responders and other disaster relief workers. Who can provide PFA? Both professionals and community members can provide PFA. You may even need to help your friends, colleagues, or neighbours after a disaster or emergency. By learning PFA, you will build the skills you need to provide that support. You don't need to have formal healthcare training (e.g., psychology, social work, counselling, nursing).

Rebound with Attendance Professional Learning Community
The
purpose of the RVS Rebound with Attendance Professional Learning Community is to continue the work of the Attendance Innovation
campaign "Present for a Purpose”, that was launched in 2016
to help increase students' regular attendance at school. More than ever
before, chronic absence is a valuable metric that alerts us to the students and
families who may be facing barriers to accessing learning opportunities. In
recognition of its impact on student development, the community will
continue to employ the evidence-based knowledge
from campaign, and the learnings that a three-tiered approach aims to
educate communities regarding the importance of regular school attendance, empower
schools to utilize data to guide and improve practices; and eliminate barriers
to attendance through timely and effective interventions. The
Attendance PL Community will share practices, case studies,
resources, ideas, and feedback within the group as they implement key
attendance prevention and intervention strategies within their spheres of
influence. The goals for the Professional Learning Community that are aligned with the 4YP: · Connect to passions, interests, and people – We will plan to work together to consider the evidence-based practices that help students be good school attenders. We are emphasizing the role everyone can play.? We will explore how the review of attendance data on an ongoing basis, helps to identify, early on, students in need of additional support as well as practices and policies in need of revision. · Achieve their potential – We will explore what works to reduce chronic absenteeism, through three-tiered prevention and intervention and PBIS to support students to achieve their potential. Some guiding questions we aim to answer within this: · In order to monitor attendance,
how does utilizing existing PBIS school-based teams support best practices and
intervention to support students? · What universal, targeted, and specialized interventions support students to be good attenders? · How does utilizing existing Dossier, Attendance Works, and RVS Attendance Innovation artifacts support students to be good attenders? How we will meet our purpose and goals: ·Those
interested can come to one or all of the meetings, as it will be a guided
conversation at each session where we will share best practices, ideas, and
interventions ·Meeting notes and key findings will be documented and communicated ·We will meet 4 to 5 times over the 2021-2022 school year for 1-2 hours, commit to coming to one, or come to all. (Oct 29, Jan 7th, March 25th and June 3rd)

Reframing Regulation: A sensory-motor approach to self-regulation and behaviourLearn practical motor and sensory foundational building blocks to implement in your classroom. “We adults take for granted how our bodies operate, and how the experiences of our bodies teach us to understand the world around us. The energy spent constructing a world of objects, sights, sounds, colors, shapes, dimensions, and directions is enormous. Without the incredible and finely-tuned machine called our body, our brain would be at a loss to describe the world. Our ability to see, touch, feel, hear, move, and control ourselves in relationship to the environment is the slate that academic learning is etched on.” For more information please see the video link here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6qFQ2bmOBw

Responding to Behaviour - Module 5
Module 5: Reactive Planning Modules 1-4 set us up to develop a reactive plan, if required. Prior to developing a reactive plan, prevention, teaching strategies and data will be reviewed to ensure fidelity of implementation. The intent of PTR (Prevent, Teach, Reinforce) is to make problem behaviours irrelevant, inefficient, and ineffective. During this module we will explore designing reactive plans that emphasize safety for the child, other students and for the staff members involved. Pre-requisite: Module 3&4
Responding to Behaviour in ClassroomsThis session examines the "what, where, when, and why" of student behaviour, using insights from brain science to deepen our understanding and guide our responses. We will also discuss practical strategies to support students in ways that build strong relationships and foster healthy, positive learning environments.
Responding to Behaviour: Module 1&2Module 1: Understanding & Defining Behaviour During this module we will look at the "what, where, when and why" of student behaviour. We will begin to unpack the neurosequential model to connect brain science with understanding of behaviour. Throughout all 5 modules we will examine behaviour through a Trauma Informed lens. Module 2: Functional Behaviour Assessment & Data Tracking During this module we will examine tools to help us understand specific student behaviour. We will learn to gather data using Simplified FBAs and Data Tracking forms. This data is used to make a hypothesis statement identifying routines, triggers and possible functions of student behaviour to design possible interventions.
Responding to Behaviour: Module 3 & 4Module 3: Competing Pathways - During this module we will review hypothesis statements to explain problem behaviour. From there, we will create a Competing Pathway Diagram (this is the road map for designing intervention) that identifies Setting Events, Antecedent, Problem Behaviour and Maintaining Consequence. We will begin to explore Alternative Replacement Behaviours to replace Problem Behaviour. Module 4: Prevent, Teach & Reinforce- During this module, we will explore implementing interventions through prevention, teaching strategies, and how to reinforce desired and problem behaviour. Participants will learn how to align hypotheses with the intervention procedures including implementing replacement behaviours and ongoing data monitoring. Pre-requisite: Module 1&2. To register for this session, please email Jo-El Buerlen, Learning Supports.
Responding to Challenging BehaviourThe session is intended for LS teachers and LA’s working with complex learners. The session will include compassionate communication with students, strategies to support regulation and a review of the prompt hierarchy. Examples will be discussed as well as an opportunity to ask questions regarding specific situations.

RVS Comprehension Assessment Tool Boot Camp Grade 4-12 (levels L - Z+)Did you know there are 12 Systems of Strategic Action needed to work together in order for students to be able to read and understand text? And that students reading at the same level often require differentiated instruction to grow their reading capacity? So as a teacher, how do we demystify our readers’ comprehension strengths and challenges? Authentic conversations using the RVS Comprehension Assessment Tool can assist teachers in understanding each reader and can help to identify explicit learning opportunities that will grow this foundational skill over time. Join the Literacy team as we work together to build participant’s knowledge around reading comprehension and how the RVS Comprehension tool, used with any text, can provide data that will direct next steps in learning and showcase student growth over time. Participants will learn how to remove barriers for implementation, discuss when and how to administer in large classes as part of their regular reading instruction and how this tool can be leveraged in other classroom practices.
RVS Literacy Leadership Cohort K-8: Year TwoRVS Literacy Leadership Cohort K-8: Year Two “The greatest effects for professional learning occur when it challenges teachers’ thinking and conceptions about student learning and engages them sufficiently to develop their knowledge and skills in ways that improve student outcomes”. (Timperley, et al, 2007) Essential Condition #2 of the K-12 RVS Literacy and Numeracy Framework: Leaders at all levels have the capacity to champion the implementation of literacy and numeracy programming in their schools, we are offering school based leaders and their literacy leadership teams (coaches/lead literacy teachers) an opportunity to participate in the RVS Literacy Leadership K-8 Cohort Year Two. Over three sessions, this collaborative job-embedded Literacy Leadership Year Two K - 8 Cohort, will afford administrators, literacy coaches and lead teachers, who participated in the Professional Literacy Community offered last year, the opportunity to continue to build his/her capacity to champion the implementation of literacy programming in their schools. Using the Spiral of Inquiry (Timperley, Halbert & Kaser, 2014), school leaders will engage in professional inquiry that aims to transform how educators learn and lead within teams and across networks. Adopting a mindset of curiosity, school leaders and coaches will design engaging, and meaningful professional literacy learning as they work through the six phases of the Spiral of Inquiry: scanning, focusing, developing a hunch, engaging in new professional learning, taking new professional action and checking for impact. Leadership strategies, processes and levers of change will be explored in depth with an emphasis on school based coaching and literacy walks. The sessional dates for the RVS Literacy Leadership K-8 Cohort Year Two will be on October 1, 2018; December 10, 2018; and March 14, 2019. Each session will be held from 8:30-11:30am at the Education Centre. Literacy walks and other cross-school collaborative learning opportunities are also possibilities for small group exploration. Participants are encouraged to also join the Literacy Leadership Connected Community that will provide leaders with a deeper understanding of literacy content, new directions in literacy learning and Alberta Education Literacy Progressions and links to new literacy curriculum. To facilitate teams coming together, each school is entitled to sub coverage for one participant only; a budget code will be provided upon registration to each school for this purpose. It is the school’s responsibility to cover additional participants’ substitute costs. Please note: participants require administrator approval prior to registering.

Suicidal Ideation and Behaviour Protocol TrainingIn
recent years the importance of child and adolescent mental health has been
discussed in many forums, including within the education sector. Schools are
vital as they provide an important opportunity for the identification of mental
health concerns. Educators play a critical role in identifying risk for suicide
and supporting youth to seek help when expressing suicidal thoughts or
behaviour. However, school staff often report feeling uncertain about how to
best support a student in these circumstances. A School-based Suicidal Ideation
Response Protocol (SI Protocol) was launched in August 2019 and is highlighted
in the Alberta Government’s Pathways to hope: best practices in suicide
prevention for Alberta schools (April 2020). It offers a standardized and
structured approach for school teachers/support staff, school mental health
providers, and school administrators. This presentation will provide an
overview of the SI Protocol, describe the benefits experienced by early
adopters, and highlight the evaluation findings to date. This presentation will
benefit you if you:

Supporting Instructional Strategies Across the Content Areas for High School TeachersHow do we teach our students to think like mathematicians? Write like a scientist? Speak like a historian? Through embedding instructional strategies across the content areas teachers can help students to develop literacy skills and competencies within each discipline. Working with international literacy consultant and coach, Dr. Joe Stouffer, teachers will be encouraged to examine their role as literacy teachers in the context of their content areas. Building on foundational knowledge of reading development, this session examines how teachers can continue to support reading comprehension for a wide range of adolescent learners. Collaborative discussion and effective practical strategies to embed directly into tomorrow’s lesson will be shared throughout this morning session. Please note: Attending teachers are asked to bring resources (textbooks, articles, etc) that they are presently working with to be used within this facilitation.

The Farm Design Day
The Impact of COVID-19 on Grade 1 Classroom MakeupPlanning and designing grade 1 programming to meet the needs of a broader range of learners Though kindergarten is not mandatory in the province of Alberta, in
any given year most students in grade one classrooms will have attended a kindergarten
program. Due to the impact of Covid-19, some families have chosen not to send
their children to kindergarten for the 2020-21 school year which will
potentially create more diversity in grade one classrooms for the fall of 2021.
This professional learning opportunity will present ways in which teachers can
proactively plan for greater diversity in their classrooms. Specifically,
·
What opportunities and challenges will this new reality create? ·
How can I structure my classroom and design learning for students
who have not yet experienced learning in a school environment? ·
What is the potential for play to support learning in a grade 1
classroom? Does play really belong in a grade 1 classroom? ·
What playful strategies are best suited to support students in
meeting the curricular outcomes? ·
Where does assessment fit within play-based learning structures? It is the hope that teachers who attend this session will be willing to
continue to engage in on-going learning throughout the 2021-22 school year in
relation to the resource Story Workshop: New Possibilities for Young Writers
by Susan Harris MacKay. This book, along with a starter kit of play items, will
be provided to teachers who are interested in this longer term opportunity.

Weaving Indigenous Ways into our Online Community
In this session, preservice teachers from Ambrose University will join teachers in small group discussions to share how they have started their own journey with TQS 5, Foundational Knowledge of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit. The preservice teachers have had a range of experiences learning from Indigenous educators, land-based experiences, creating their own land acknowledgement, exploring their own identities, and developing an understanding of the complex role education has and can play in fostering more equitable learning for all students in Alberta classrooms. This conversation will be led by Kathy Crawford (Natoyiikisistakakii) whose family is a legacy of the Sixties
Scoop. Kathy will share a few curriculum connections to facilitate the inclusion of Blackfoot and other First Nation knowledge in teaching practices.
